STORYTELLING (ST)

Time limit: 8 Minutes. Storytelling involves the sharing of a story with an audience, with the primary objective to entertain them. Competitors are encouraged to use a wide range of movement to express their characters and the plot. Storytelling differs somewhat from humorous, dramatic, and duo interpretation in the delivery used. Most storytellers interpret the story using their own words although they may, if they choose, strictly use the author’s words. A storyteller’s presentation must be from memory and they may not use  physical objects or costumes to interpret their selection.

Selections for storytelling must come from published, printed novels, short stories, plays or poetry. The presentation should include an informational, relevant, enticing-in-content, and conversational-in-delivery introduction. The introduction should note the title and author of the source from which the cutting was taken.

Singing may be used sparingly if it is part of a character’s dialogue. Storytellers should not make singing a major part of their performance. Contestants in storytelling will be evaluated on the quality of the introduction, the selection, whether the storyteller conveys insight and understanding of the story, characterization, overall delivery, and effectiveness of the performance through the storyteller’s individual and unique style.
